The only option for Google to compete with Apple is to form a partnership with Samsung

Not very long ago, there seemed to be conflict between Google and Samsung regarding Android. The fact that Google was not mentioned at all in Samsung's previous announcements and that Tizen was only mentioned in passing suggested that there might be a split in the Android community. Simply put, these titans of mobile technology were not always in agreement.

By the time of the Samsung Galaxy S24's release, one could mistakenly believe that the powerful Android brands have a lasting friendship. Google employees took the stage to talk about the Galaxy S24 as well as collaborative features like Circle to Search and improvements to Messages. Beneath the surface of the newest Galaxy AI features is the technological footprint of Google. These improvements show a fresh unity since they are not limited to the Galaxy series but also to the Pixel 8 lineup. Furthermore, large-scale projects like Gemini Nano indicate Google's goal to integrate AI capabilities into a wider range of Android smartphones.

There is a purpose to this show of oneness. Now that Apple has taken the lead in phone shipments worldwide for the first time, the iPhone is the only significant smartphone series with unmatched global reach. Everyone else is fighting to survive, and if Android wants to overtake the market leader, now is not the time for internal strife in such a difficult environment. Even if Google has won some markets and Samsung has seen ups and downs, the Pixel series hasn't shipped in large enough quantities to significantly affect Apple's market dominance. Given the existing circumstances, Google and Samsung must work together to present the iPhone with a more formidable competition.

With the help of RCS messaging projects and AI developments, Google and Samsung are collaborating to weaken Apple's monopoly on the US market. The new Galaxy S24 series' AI capabilities are just one aspect of this growing partnership. Recent partnerships include Samsung integrating Nearby Share into Samsung's Quick Share and participating in Google's RCS messaging campaign to counter iMessage's market dominance in the US. Future projects, like the XR headset created in collaboration with Qualcomm to compete with Apple's Vision Pro, will benefit from the alliance.

Looking back, Samsung was crucial in bringing Wear OS 4 back to life. Its early foldable device experiments also had an impact on Android 12L and other foldable features, which helped to create products like the Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open. While some efforts pushed the alliance forward, others tried to close gaps with Apple. With Samsung already on its fifth generation of flexible phones, surpassing Apple, which has yet to release its first foldable handset, Google and Samsung are leading the way in artificial intelligence and foldable technologies.

Modern technology has the ability to change lives, but this does not ensure that consumers will embrace it. Nevertheless, it puts businesses like Google, Samsung, and other Android companies at the forefront of new product categories. It remains to be seen if this technological advantage can deflect attention from Apple. Apple has been able to assert its revolutionary status due to its preference for incremental innovation. However, the last 12 months have seen impressive technological outcomes from Google and Samsung's closer cooperation, providing a wide range of exceptional smartphones within the Android ecosystem. I hope that this partnership continues and results in further advancements down the road.
